The public is invited to hear an artificial intelligence scam in Lake Twp.

MILBURY – The Lake City Police Department, in partnership with the Neighborhood Watch Program, will host a meeting to discuss how fraudsters use artificial intelligence to defraud unsuspecting victims of money and identity.

The hearing will be held at 7 p.m. June 27 at Lake City Hall, 27975 Cummings Road. There is no charge for the event and no pre-registration is required.

“People are being scammed out of millions of dollars and when they think they’re talking to family and friends, their identities are being stolen,” said Ron Craig, a crime prevention officer and community policing officer for the Lake City Police Department.

The AI used by Craig is so good, even experts are being fooled by the technology.

Details will be provided during the session on how the fraudsters can access the human voice, use new AI technology to replicate that voice, and use readily available data to complete the scam.

“We’re letting people know how to protect themselves and thwart these types of scams,” Craig said. “We hope the public will attend this neighborhood watch meeting to learn more about the scams.”

If fraudsters get hold of victims’ personal information, they usually find their bank accounts empty, the crime prevention officer said.

All members of the city’s neighborhood watch groups are asked to attend the meeting.

Government officials estimate that $10 billion is lost to various types of fraud each year.

“We regularly get reports from people who are victims or victims of scams, especially seniors,” Craig said. We had one resident who lost over $6,000 to a money transfer scam to Hong Kong.

Once people lose their money or identity to fraudsters, there is little law enforcement can do to recover the money.

“Most fraudsters are operating outside of the United States, so the FBI usually can’t even get to them,” Craig said.

Additional information on the meeting can be obtained by calling Craig at 419-481-6354.
