Google has cut more than 1,800 jobs in its home state of California as part of the largest punitive action in the company’s history.

On Friday, Alphabet owner Google announced it was laying off 12,000 jobs, or 6% of its full-time workforce. According to documents released by the state and seen by CNBC, 1,845 jobs, or a 15% decrease, were in California.

Most of the headcount reductions in the state are in and around the company’s Silicon Valley headquarters. 1,436 jobs were cut in Mountain View, where Google is based, and 119 were in San Bruno, home of YouTube. Palo Alto saw 53 pieces.

“As a result of this action, separation of employees at the facility is expected to begin on March 31, 2023,” the documents, dated Jan. 20, read.

A Google spokesperson told CNBC that the March date is due to the notice period required in California. The Notice (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice Act) requires employers to give at least 60 days written notice to affected employees and state and local representatives of “any plant closing or mass layoff.”

Google’s original announcement said the company would pay US workers “for the full notice period (at least 60 days).”

More than a quarter of the affected Bay Area roles had “director” or “senior” in the titles. Cuts include 27 in-home massage therapists, 24 in Mountain View and three in the Los Angeles and Irvine Southern California markets.

In total, 177 layoffs took place in LA, mostly from the company’s Playa Vista campus. 60 was cut in Irvine.

As the tech market adjusts to the end of an extended bull market, the alphabet is weighing down growth and recession risks. At a company-wide meeting on Monday, CEO Sundar Pichai expressed concern about the future while taking questions from employees.

“I understand you’re worried about what’s next for your career,” Pichai said at the meeting. “Also, it’s sad that they lost some good colleagues in the company.”
