A major development in downtown Redding on Thursday with the announcement of the Redding Market Center Public Market.

“We’re very excited because we’ve been working for the last year to bring it out, what we think is right for the community,” Allen Knott, CEO of K2 Development Companies, told KRCR on Thursday. “The public market is the right mix of ingredients. it has a combination of community gathering places where people can relax widely, it has a mix of artisans, true masters of their craft, where they buy goods right there. in front of you, they deliver and prepare the product. And the next part of that, which is unique to the public market, is that they have trading experience; items home and then be able to deliver them to your outdoor barbecue or family for an evening event or weekend or group event.”

Knott says a public market on Market Street is right for the community. Built in 2020, in the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic, the business space was mostly empty. So they focused on food and drink under the public market concept that’s been successful in big cities like San Francisco and Seattle.

The first three tenants, artisan bakery Tarsus and Fall River Brewing Company, have been announced and are looking to be part of a new downtown food and gathering space.

“You can get a beer from us, you can wander around different food vendors and maybe find somewhere you’ll want to eat,” Fall River Brewing Company CEO John Hutchings told KRCR on Thursday. “You can actually hang out in a public space and just hang out with everyone who’s here, wandering around the market and just enjoying your drinks or enjoying what you’re eating at the same time. And so it offers just a different experience. to be able to enjoy all of them at once,” Knott explained.

And Bantam Kitchen will open a second Redding location here as part of growing downtown synergy.

“Actually, when we found out that Fall River [Brewing Company] was going to be here selling beer, we said, ‘we’re in,'” said Keith Wood, owner of The Bantam Kitchen. “Since we go to Fall River all the time as a family, we take. our kids go to the brewery all the time. And so doing something together with them. To be in an area with other suppliers, other local business owners, to be a part of that community, we’re just really excited about it.”

The public market is scheduled to open next summer, 2024.
