Life imitated art on the set of Andie Macdowell Groundhog DayIt was released 30 years ago on February 12, 1993.

Just as Pittsburgh news producer Rita Hansen is finally reminiscing about the sly weather Phil Connors remembers that same Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, McDowell is captivated by her incomparable colleague, Bill Murray.

“I’ll tell you the funny thing about Bill, you never know what to expect with him. He is unique. Man,” McDowell told Yahoo Entertainment in 2019. Remember the role Interview (see above, at Groundhog Day from 3:30) “He is very much Creator. Fresh. Every time he does a scene, it’s new, it’s fresh, he adds more things to it. Off camera, he’s just as weird, maybe even weirder. Because it’s just being him,” he said.

Magical Murray stories abound from here to the far corners of the internet, and McDowell has a few to share his time with.

“People came from all over to see him,” she recalls. “And on Friday nights, ‘Sorry guys. I don’t do briefings on Fridays.’ And it didn’t matter where they came from. But the funny thing is how he says it, people accept it. They are not offended by it. No one was angry or said anything nasty.

There was another time when Murray and McDowell were filming a scene together in a car when Murray stepped on the gas and drove them off the set.

“It just came out,” she says. “And he said, ‘What are you doing? Where are we going, Bill? And he goes, ‘Oh, I thought we were going for a ride.’ So we just went. [for] About 10, 15 minutes.
