As critics share their limited thoughts on Ahsoka, many are impressed with the show’s connections to Star Wars Rebels even if some of the details may be lost on those unfamiliar with the animated series.
Several reviewers were able to share their reactions to the upcoming Disney+ series on X and a common throughline throughout many of the posts is how Ahsoka successfully builds on and furthers the characters and plot of Rebels. While those who have seen the show will no doubt appreciate this direction, those who have no knowledge of the crew of the Ghost and their adventures during the early days of the Galactic Civil War may not resonate as deeply with the narrative. Star Rosario Dawson is also spotlighted for her compelling portrayal of Ahsoka alongside Natasha Liu Bordizzo whom many commended for authentically bringing Sabine Wren into live action. The score, lightsaber fight choreography and general cinematography have also received ample praise.
While many reviewers have placed a great deal of emphasis on Rebels, Dawson herself has insisted that the beloved animated show is not necessary viewing to enjoy Ahsoka. “With Star Wars fans, there’s folks who really just watch the films, but now and especially with The Mandalorian, more people are watching the live-action shows,” Dawson said. “And then there are people who watch the animated shows. There’s even a tier beyond that with all the books and fan fiction. So there’s different levels to the Star Wars family, and it’s always been very highly considered to make sure [everyone can watch it].”
The Rise of Thrawn
Ahsoka will follow the titular character as she embarks on a quest to track down and eliminate the sinister Grand Admiral Thrawn, a villain who was reintroduced into the mainline Star Wars canon through Rebels. Having disappeared for years, rumors have begun to swirl around the galaxy the villain is planning to assume his role as the heir to the Empire, reestablishing its presence. Thrawn will be played by Lars Mikkelsen, who also voiced the character in Rebels.
Aside from Sabine and Thrawn, the show will also mark the live-action debut of the fan-favorite pilot Her Syndulla, brought to life by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. “After five seasons of watching Rebels, those characters are real already,” the actor said of her character. “It becomes a different challenge of stepping into some shoes that have already been filled one way and bringing them into literally a different dimension.”
Ahsoka premieres on Disney+ on Aug. 23.
