Mario voice actor Chris Pratt has discussed the imminent sequel to the box office smash Super Mario Bros. and says news about what’s next should come “soon.”

Exactly how soon, though, seems to depend on the ongoing writers’ strike that has shut down much of Hollywood.

“We’re in the midst of this writers’ strike, and everything is on hold and on hold for the right reasons,” Pratt told Entertainment Tonight.

Super Mario Bros. trailer.

“I really support the WGA and our writers,” he continued. “When the negotiations are done and the writers feel comfortable moving forward, then it’s time to start talking about what’s next.”

Thanks to the movie’s huge success, it seems like a follow-up to the Super Mario Bros. movie is inevitable. It is the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time, the highest-grossing animated film of all time, and the highest-grossing film of 2023 so far.

It grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide this week.

“We’re very grateful for the support,” Pratt said, reflecting on the film’s success. “[It’s] I was surprised at how successful the film was.

“I mean, I expected people to love it the way I did, but it’s really multi-generational around the world. People love it. They love Mario… It’s a fun, funny, beautiful, heartwarming movie. God, I can’t believe I’m a part of it.”

Possible sequels and spin-offs have always been a part of Nintendo and Minions’ movie studio’s plans. Even before the film began, there was talk of a Donkey Kong-facing project in progress.

So, where could the Mario movie series go next? Spoilers abound, but Eurogamer already has several ideas.

I liked the movie for what it was, and Eurogamer’s Super Mario Bros. movie review called it “a fun commercial for all things Nintendo.”
