Rajinikanth’s Jailer has become one of the highest-grossing Tamil films in a matter of one week. While many such high-earning films take weeks to reach the spot, all it took for Rajinikanth-starrer was just a few days. Rajinikanth’s fans initially were a bit sceptical about Nelson Dilipkumar directing their idol as the director had just turned out a damp squib, Vijay’s Beast. However, the director has made a successful comeback with the film, which has earned Rs 450 crore worldwide in one week. The film has been breaking one box office record after the other ever since its release on August 10.

Highest opening day collection for a Tamil film

Before Jailer, Beast had the record of the highest opening day collection of Rs 35 crore, and Jailer beat it effortlessly by earning Rs 43 crore from across the world. While Beast and other big releases had early morning shows, Jailer didn’t have such screening due to a new rule passed by the Tamil Nadu government.

Fastest movie in the history of Tamil cinema to reach Rs 150-crore mark

What’s more impressive about Jailer is the pace at which the film is setting box office records! The film is now the fastest film in Tamil cinema history to cross Rs 150 crore in a matter of seven days. On day 7, the film earned Rs 159 crore, according to trade analysts. Previously, Ponniyin Selvan held the record by minting Rs 131 crore in a week.

First Tamil film to touch Rs 400-crore mark in a week

While it took four weeks for Kamal Haasan’s Vikram to touch Rs 400-crore mark at the worldwide box office, Jailer pulled it off in a matter of a week. On day 7, the Rajinikanth-starrer crossed the milestone, earning Rs 411 crore, according to Sacnilk. Even Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan managed to only mint Rs 324.05 crore in one week.

Highest Tamil grosser of 2023

2023 already witnessed the release of big stars’ films including Vijay and Ajith. In January, Thunivu and Varisu clashed at the box office with the latter emerging as the winner of the face-off. Varisu collected Rs 297.55 at the worldwide box office, while Thunivu managed to mint Rs 200 crore. However, Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 2, which was released in April turned out to be the highest grosser by collecting Rs 345 crore (worldwide box office collection). Now, Jailer has broken all the records and has become the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023. It has to be seen if Vijay’s Leo, which will be released this year will end dethroning Jailer’s record.

According to trade analyst Ramesh Bala, the film is currently at the number two position in Kerala in terms of the highest box office collection for a Tamil film. “It is at all-time number two in Kerala, and it will soon take down Vikram and become all-time number one in the state. In Karnataka, also it will soon become the highest-grossing Tamil film. In Telugu as well, the film should be in the second or third position,” he said.

Jailer’s international box office records

When asked about the performance of the film in the overseas market, he said, “If you take the US, it is the all-time number two Tamil film. In the UK, it is behind only Ponniyin Selvan 1. In the Gulf region, like the UAE, it is now the highest-grossing Tamil film. Same case in Australie and New Zealand, where it is behind PS 1 and at the second position.”

Jailer’s box office predictions

The film is expected that the lifetime collection of the film will be around Rs 600 crore. “2.0 had a good run in Hindi. Also, it was released in Russia as well. So, it was able to collect around Rs 700 to Rs 800 crore. However, Jailer will beat Ponniyin Selvan 1 collection and become the second highest-grossing Tamil film of all time,” Ramesh said.
