You may know Måneskin. Even if you don’t listen to their music willingly, you probably saw their performance at last year’s VMAs or their Eurovision appearance in 2021.
At this point, the Italian rock band is perhaps best known for their edgy style, both on stage and on the red carpet – we’re talking garter belts, lots of eye makeup, etc. Check out the picture below, you’ll get the deal.
Two of the band’s members — Victoria De Angelis and Ethan Torchio, first and third from left in this photo — identify as members of the LGBTQIA+ community. The other two, Damiano Davide and Thomas Raggi, separate straight away.
Apparently, Damiano and Thomas have been accused of queerbaiting because of their own writing choices – a topic that the group raised in a recent interview with the Guardian.
Sometimes it happens, but sometimes [the accusations are] So extreme,” Victoria said. “It’s stupid to label queer people who should be fighting these stereotypes and create more hate.
“The truth [that Raggi and David] Just because they’re straight doesn’t mean they can’t wear makeup. Or heels.”
Damiano added that his and Thomas’ personal style is often affected by their bandmates identifying as queer. “What Thomas and I do is always checked by two people. [queer]”Of course, we don’t experience the same thing, but we live very closely with the people of the community every day.”
Damiano also points out that people in Italy have received backlash for their style choices. “We’ve always been very divided. There are people who love us and are very proud of what we do, and then there’s a whole other section made up of conservatives and traditional rock and roll fans and fascists. They hate us with everything they’ve got.”
In short, it looks like Maneskin will continue to work, and there doesn’t seem to be any problem with that. We’ll see what they come up with next!
