Nick Cave talks about what to expect from the next Bad Seeds album, and if there’s a chance we’ll get more music from Grinderman soon.

Earlier this year, the Australian musician was criticized by a fan for losing much of the angst of his early career.

Cave shared a fan note in a post on his blog The Red Hand File: “When did you become a Hallmark card hippie? Joy, love, peace. Puck! Where is the anger, the rage, the hatred?

In response, Cave claimed that his son Arthur’s death was behind the change in energy. “Things changed after my first son died,” he wrote. “No It has changed. For better or worse, the angst you’re talking about has lost its appeal and, yes, I’ve probably become a Hallmark card hippie. Hate stopped being interesting. I shed those feelings like old skins. They were their own kind of puck.

“We can make a Grinderman record, because Grinderman is basically improvised. It’s challenging musically and you never really know what you’re going to get, but I don’t think we can make a four-story rock ‘n’ roll record anymore,” he said.

Cave went on to say that he didn’t think “old-school Bad Seeds could record where a rock band basically plays”.

“I don’t see that happening,” he added. This is not next [Bad Seeds] The record is atmospheric – not at all – but I don’t see us going back to that basic rock ‘n’ roll style. I don’t know how I’m going to do it now.”

The musician also opened up about his close collaboration with his Heavy Seeds bandmate Warren Ellis.

“Our relationship seems incredibly fruitful,” he said. “We’re in the studio now, working on a new Bad Seeds record with other members. I think what comes out is immediately interesting and always different.
