Sam Levinson IdolThe new HBO series, starring Lily-Rose Depp and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday night, after five minutes and more than five minutes of praise.

After the first two episodes of the series premiere next month, Levinson, the Euphoria The creator, who created this with Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, was accompanied by the two stars and moved emotionally as he addressed the crowd at the Grand Theater Lumiere.

“I’m incredibly proud of this show, and I’m proud of the way we made this show. It’s audible.”

Pop star Tesfaye, who is making his debut, was also wiping away tears.

Idol Depp stars as Jocelyn, a super-powered Britney-esque character who recently hit the big time in the dog-eat-dog world of showbiz. After a nervous breakdown derails her last tour, she’s determined to reclaim her rightful status as America’s biggest and sexiest pop star.

The first two episodes that aired tonight introduced Depp’s Joseline, who is unhappy with her comeback record and wants to save it for release. Then she meets Abel’s character, Theodore (Tsefaye), a nightclub impresario with a stick at the club – it’s an instant connection. With some, it turns on the forced control quickly 50 shades-level BDSM and gets her to mix her record that night, filled with the sounds of her longing for sex.

Her label doesn’t go for the new remix and tells her to get it together; They’ve lost a lot of money since her meltdown and withdrawal from the tour months ago.

Abel’s character then plays hard to get, yanking the men’s penis with a Taser that is surrounded by glimpses. He then tells Jocelyn that he is inside.

Meanwhile, we learn that Theodore is a “music manager” as well as a club owner. But Joseline’s live-in best friend/assistant is already suspicious, and Joseline’s team and manager (Hank Azaria) dig deep into his past – the dude is a problem but no one knows how much of a problem yet.

Troye Sivan stars with Dan Levy, Davin Joy Randolph, Eli Roth, Harry Neff, Jane Adams, Jenny Ruby Jane, Mike Dean, Moses Sumney, Rachel Sennot, Ramsey and Susannah Sohn.

Levinson called out Depp’s performance in his comments tonight.

‘Abel and I count our lucky stars every day that you’re Jocelyn – you’re fearless. “Thank you for taking this leap.”

Levinson, Tesfaye and Fahim executive produce alongside Kevin Turen, Ashley Levinson, Joseph Epstein, Aaron L. Gilbert LeBron and Sarah E. White. Levinson also directs. The HBO series is produced in association with A24.

It premieres Sunday, June 4 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
