ALLIANCE, Ohio (WJW) – It will be a day of remembrance for Molly Handy and Carrie
Meissner of the Alliance.
“Oh my, I was so surprised. We are not NASCAR people. This is all new to us,” Meissner said.
Fallen Marine Lance Corporal Daniel McVicker will be among those honored Sunday during the NASCAR Coca Cola 600 race in Charlotte, North Carolina.
McVicker’s mother Carrie and sister Molly attend the tournament.
“We go to lunch, we hang out in the garage. We get invited to these ceremonies. We go to races,” Handy said.
Driver Aric Almirola competes in the #10 Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing, which features the McVicker name on the windshield.
“You don’t expect things like this to happen after 18 years. But we are very happy that he is being remembered,” said Handy.
McVicker was killed in 2005 when a roadside bomb hit the Humvee he was driving in Iraq. In the year
Each car in the race honors a fallen military service member.
The McVicker family says it’s appropriate. Molly Daniels had a passion for music, sports and fast cars.
“We’ll always remember him. He’s always been a part of our lives, but this is special,” Handy said.
