Modern Family star Julie Bowen, who plays Claire Dunphy on the show, has opened up about her sexuality.

Speaking on her podcast Quitters, she said she has “always been straight” but there was a time where she fell in love with a woman.

She also talked about how people should not be forced to disclose their sexuality or their private lives if they do not want to.

“The idea that we lead with, ‘So, how do you identify?’ and immediately you get into what you do in the bedroom,” she said.

“I’m straight. I’ve always been straight. I was in love with a woman for a while, but she did not love me back. She liked women, but she did not like me in that way… it never really took off, so I never really had to challenge my concept of my sexuality,” she explained.

“What you do with your body should not be the first thing that we know about people or care about. That’s your business,” she added.

These words especially ring true now as Heartstopper actor Kit Connor quit Twitter after he was accused of queer baiting, after which he was forced to come out to the world and explain that he was bisexual.

“Back for a minute. I’m bi. congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself,” he wrote. “I think some of you missed the point of the show. Bye.”

He has since received a huge amount of support from fans and peers online, including Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman.

“I truly don’t understand how people can watch Heartstopper and then gleefully spend their time speculating about sexualities and judging based on stereotypes,” she tweeted. “I hope all those people are embarrassed as F**K. Kit you are amazing.”

Heartstopper is streaming on Netflix. Seasons 2 and 3 have been confirmed.
