Desert Hills Presbyterian Church (DHPC) is pleased to announce a new summer class program as part of its popular Fitness by the Rocks program that encourages people to be physically, spiritually and socially active. While the classes are open to all ages and fitness levels, they are specifically designed to help adults age 55 and older improve their physical and cognitive health. Classes at DHPC Fellowship Center, 34605 N. Tom Darlington Rd., Scottsdale, Ariz. 85266; All Fitness at Rocks classes are free, BrainSavers total body classes are $5.00 per session.

Fitness classes include “Strength, Core and Recovery” on Mondays at 8pm and Wednesdays at 1pm. An effective fitness integration class encourages participants to engage in low-impact cardio exercises to renew the heart, burn calories and increase lung capacity. On Wednesdays at 8:00 a.m., a morning stretch and balance class – set against the backdrop of beautiful cliffs – encourages participants to improve flexibility, coordination, circulation and balance while reducing muscle stiffness and relieving arthritis symptoms. There will be upgrades for all fitness levels. “Sit, Stretch and Strengthen with Chair Exercises” on Thursdays at Noon! It focuses on exercises that can be done sitting in a chair or on a mat. Suitable for people with physical limitations, this class is designed to improve flexibility, blood circulation, muscle and core strength, posture and breathing. Other highlights of the summer class schedule include “Strengthen Osteoporosis” in June (where all sessions provide additional information about bone health), cardio dance classes on June 21 and July 19 at 1 p.m., and a healthy cooking class. On July 12 at 11:30 p.m

In addition to helping people improve physical well-being, exercise offers brain and fitness BrainSavers. Created by board-certified neurologist Dr. Paul Bendheim—author of The Brain Training Revolution—BrainSavers is designed to promote a healthy lifestyle and prevent age-related cognitive decline.

Class sessions begin with fun cognitive exercises that help improve memory, followed by exercises where participants can stand or sit on a chair. With improvements for all fitness levels, the class format includes a low-impact warm-up, muscle-strengthening exercises, stretching and relaxation.
