The number of new flu cases in Pennsylvania is down slightly, but the number is still higher than usual. And with more than 25,000 recorded last week, doctors say there are more concerns for the coming weeks. Dr. John Goldman with UPMC, Goldman said, “Hopefully that number is going down.” A little down, that’s good, a lot of going out is better than them. But we’re still at a very high level of activity. We still have a few holidays where people normally gather, malls are crowded, etc. Those are good conditions for the flu to spread,” Goldman said. Goldman said many Pennsylvanians have weakened immune systems to the flu, many are masked and socially distanced because of Covid-19. They are sick or need a trip to the hospital.” People who die are especially old, over 65, but often those people catch the flu from their children or grandchildren. So we really say — this year especially — the best prevention is getting a flu shot,” Goldman said. Pennsylvania has seen more than 100,000 cases of the flu this season. 20 people have died.

The number of new flu cases in Pennsylvania is up slightly, but the number is still higher than usual.

And with more than 25,000 recorded last week alone, doctors say there’s more to worry about in the coming weeks.

Dr. John Goldman with UPMC said, “We’re hoping the numbers are going down. We’re not saying they’re low.”

Goldman said flu cases have been steady for several weeks, but have slowed somewhat in the past week.

“If the numbers go down a little, that’s good. It’s better if they go up a lot. But we’re still at a very high level of activity. We still have a couple of holidays where people normally gather, get crowded. Malls, and so on, are good conditions for the flu to spread,” Goldman said.

Goldman said many Pennsylvanians have weakened immune systems to the flu, and many are wearing masks and social distancing because of Covid-19.

He said flu shots remain the best way to avoid getting seriously ill or needing a trip to the hospital.

“The people who usually die are over the age of 65, but often those people catch the flu from their children or grandchildren. So we really say that – especially this year – the best prevention is to get the flu vaccine.” Goldman said.

Pennsylvania has seen more than 100,000 cases of the flu so far this season. 20 people died.
