Beef and broccoli on rice

It’s so much fun to take a classic takeout dish like beef and broccoli and make it delicious, healthy, and easy with just a few tweaks!

I prefer to make my own Asian takeout because it gives me the opportunity to use the best ingredients. Using high-quality, fresh ingredients that are important to our health and the health of the planet makes a big difference. So here I used humanely ground beef from a reformed farm, organic vegetables and local honey (instead of sugar).

My husband is a picky taste-tester, and he loved this modified beef and broccoli so much that he asked for it next week!

How to serve

You can serve this over white rice, jasmine rice, brown rice or cauliflower rice, and for more veggie goodness you can add white rice, peppers or zucchini.

Enjoy and please let me know in the comments if you love this recipe as much as I do!

What is beef and broccoli soup made of?

Most beef and broccoli gravy recipes are heavy and greasy because they use a ton of oil and sugar and don’t have the right balance of sweet and savory. But here we have simplified and modified the soup by combining a few ingredients:

  • ½ cup reduced sodium soy sauce or gluten-free tamari
  • 1 tablespoon honey (instead of sugar!)
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 (1-inch) fresh ginger, peeled and minced
  • 1 tablespoon of corn flour
  • ½ tablespoon sesame oil (you really don’t need a lot of oil!)

What are the benefits of eating beef and broccoli?

Lean beef (especially from human-raised animals) is a rich source of protein, rich in various vitamins and minerals, especially iron and zinc. And broccoli is an underrated superfood because it’s a good source of fiber and protein, and is full of iron, potassium, calcium, selenium and magnesium, as well as vitamins A, C, E, K and many B vitamins, including folic acid. This easy beef and broccoli recipe has far less sugar and oil than most recipes (we only use honey and ½ tablespoon of sesame oil instead of sugar), making it a really good Chinese recipe for you.

How do you clean broccoli?

This recipe calls for blanched broccoli. Blanching is an easy way to cook vegetables quickly.

Boil a large pot of water. Drop the flowers into the water and cook for two to three minutes until they are bright green and clear. Immediately pour into a container and place in an ice bath (a large bowl filled with ice water), which will stop the cooking process. Once the broccoli has cooled, pour it back into the colander.
