Goals of the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program include:

• Increase fruit and vegetable consumption to be healthy

• Promote direct marketing of Kansas foods

• Provide fresh, nutritious, unprocessed, locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey from farmers markets to low-income seniors.

• Increase domestic consumption of agricultural products by expanding or supporting local farmers’ markets.

• Develop or assist in the development of new and additional farmers’ markets

The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program is a project of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service. The program is coordinated by the Kansas Department of Health and Environmental Protection (KDHE), which works with local partners to identify and distribute checks to eligible seniors.

To apply in Ellis County, please drop by the Cottonwood Extension office at 601 Main Street and fill out an application. The office is open 8 a.m. and 1-5 p.m. To apply in Barton County, please contact the Barton County Health Department at 1300 Kansas Avenue between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at 620-793-1902.

If an individual is unable to come to the office to fill out the paperwork, they can appoint someone as a representative to help them apply and collect the product. Please let us know if you have any other questions at the contact information below.
