If you’re trying to lose weight, you need to pay attention to everything you put into your body – including what you drink. Although we always hear about the value of a healthy breakfast, we must not forget that what you drink in the morning also plays a big role in this. And as it turns out, many people start their vacation off on the wrong foot with one fattening beverage: sugar-laden coffee.

Many of us rely on a daily cup of coffee to kick start our mornings and give us the energy to take on the day. And if you, like most people, are a big fan of sweet things in life, you can choose to load that coffee with sugar, flavored syrup, sweet cream and more. Maybe you have a go to order at Starbucks that will satisfy your sweet tooth. Unfortunately, however, Best warns, “one of the worst drinking habits for healthy people is consuming high-sugar and high-fat specialty coffees.”

Of course, coffee is not the only issue; It’s everything you put in that affects your body. According to Best, “Coffee can lead to weight gain primarily because of the ingredients you use for flavoring.” Although a little treat every now and then isn’t a big deal, if you order the same sugary drink from the cafe every day, it can add up over time. According to Best, “regular coffee drinks can cause weight gain by adding high-calorie and high-fat sweeteners or creamers.”

Berdios agrees, “Additionally, a diet high in sugar is linked to a number of health problems, including inflammation and weight gain, which can lead to chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke.” all right!

And when you think about how much sugar goes into your favorite coffee drink, you often want to think twice before ordering. Burdeos lays it all out for us: “For reference, the American Heart Association recommends no more than 36 grams of sugar (9 teaspoons) per day for men and 24 grams of sugar (6 teaspoons) per day for women.” A medium and large cup of coffee with added sugar can contain up to 15 to 20 grams of sugar,” she says. Second, maybe black coffee isn’t so bad.

In fact, Best says, “Black coffee is the best for weight loss” and suggests that in some cases, “caffeine can improve weight loss efforts.” That’s good news for anyone who can handle bitterness! But if you can’t bear to take your coffee black, Bourdieu offers some advice: “I recommend making your own coffee at home, where you have complete control over the ingredients you add.” Remember that it is always better to go with natural sweeteners: it will definitely give results in the end.
