Padres bid to sign Treya Turner Even after filing for California’s higher income tax, it reportedly included a larger offer than he received in Philadelphia – catching many fans and pundits off guard. The Padres already have it Fernando Tatis Jr, Ha-Seong Kim, Manny Machado And Jake Kronenworth Options in the infield, and San Diego has a pair of $300MM players on the roster in Machado and Tatis (although the former can opt out following the 2023 season).

Padres president of baseball operations AJ Preller has speculated (included here) about whether he will look at the remaining star shortstops in free agency, but Kevin Acey Turner of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Turner was viewed as a special case. And the Padres were only interested in him instead of adding another shortstop to the mix. As such, it is unlikely that the cowards will pursue either. Carlos Correa, Xander Bogaerts Or Dansby Swanson The reversal by Turner. The Athletic’s Dennis Lynn wrote that the Padres signed with Bogart this offseason, but Lynn added that Turner was the team’s “obvious” choice. MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell added that the Padres have not spoken to Kim or Kronwersworth about a position change at this time.

Preller acknowledged the team’s interest in Turner and the frustration of not landing him in Monday night’s loss to AC and others. Part of Turner’s appeal, Preller explained, was his athleticism and experience playing outside shortstop, which the Friars believed could create some more flexible lineup options.

While the Padres are out of the mix (or at best on the fringes) for the remaining shortstops, the strong bid for Turner is still intriguing. Even with a star-studded roster and a payroll that many expect will reach its peak, it underscores that Padres ownership is willing to spend on a level commensurate with the sport’s biggest financial powers. The Padres paid the luxury tax in 2022, had a projected $210MM cap hit in 2023 and $230MM in luxury-tax obligations, Roster Resources projected, but were still content to take a $300MM+ discount on Turner.

But that doesn’t mean San Diego will jump into the bidding. Aaron JudgeBut at the very least, it opens the door to speculation about the activities that are highly used in the market. Preller talked about a corner bat and a starting pitcher as top needs. Ace points out that he is looking to meet again with San Diego Josh Bell And Brandon Drury Also recently out of auction Dominic SmithIt shows the wide range of possibilities the team is now considering with Turner in Philadelphia.
