A 23-year-old woman was killed in a shooting near the campus of University of Alabama basketball player Darius Miles on Sunday, Tuscaloosa law enforcement said.

“We have recently been made aware of the allegations against student-athlete Darius Miles, and he is no longer a member of the Alabama men’s basketball team,” the University of Alabama’s athletic department said in a statement Sunday.

Michael Lynn Davis, 20, was charged in the attack, the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit said in a release. Both suspects have been charged with murder and are being held without bond, he said.

Investigators say Miles is the only person connected to the University of Alabama.

CNN did not know if the suspects have attorneys.

Police responded to the shooting around 1:45 a.m. local time and found Jameia Jonah Harris shot to death while sitting in a car about half a mile from the university’s campus, according to information released by the Violent Crimes Unit.

The driver of the car told police a man had fired shots at the vehicle and returned fire in self-defense, possibly hitting one of the suspects, investigators said.

“After processing the scene, speaking with multiple witnesses and viewing video surveillance, two suspects were developed,” the statement said.

One of the suspects was hit by the return gunfire and suffered non-life-threatening injuries, investigators said.

“It appears that the only motive for this is that these individuals had a minor altercation with the victim while they were on The Strip,” said Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy. The Strip is a hub of restaurants and businesses near the university campus.

The university said it is working with the athletic department to investigate.

Miles, 21, is a junior at the university from Washington, D.C., according to an archived release from the men’s basketball team’s roster. Before being cut from the team, Miles was playing his third season as a forward for the Alabama Crimson Tide, the archived roster shows.
