Shortstop Eli De La Cruz is one of the most anticipated prospects in all of baseball, and Reds fans’ wait to see him play in the big leagues is almost over.

De la Cruz has arrived.

Cincinnati’s No. 1 prospect and No. 4 overall prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, De La Cruz, 21, was called up from Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday.

The switch-hitting De La Cruz hit .297/.398/.633 with 12 home runs and 36 RBIs in 38 games at Louisville this year. His season began on April 20 in his first big league camp appearance in spring training after spending time on the injured list with a left hamstring strain.

De La Cruz has been a fantastic addition to Louisville’s five-tool talent since returning from injury. He is tied for the most hitters in all of professional baseball this year, with an exit velocity of 118.8 mph recorded by Statcast. In total, he hit three balls at 116 mph in that same game.

In early May, de la Cruz was playing third base for Louisville when he launched a 99.2 mph throw to first base — the hardest throw ever recorded in Triple-A or the major leagues at the time.

On June 2, De La Cruz’s 10.97-second home run to third base tied him for the third-fastest home run in 2023 at the major league level.

De la Cruz will likely play mostly shortstop for the Reds, but could see time at third base. Another prospect is De La Cruz’s former Louisville teammate Matt McClain, who has been playing shortstop for Cincinnati since his own May 15 promotion. McClain was playing second base at Louisville when de la Cruz was at shortstop. If the Reds do the same, they could move second baseman Jonathan India to third base. India have been taking balls in the third over recently.

Since the arrival of outfielder Jay Bruce on May 27, 2008, there hasn’t been much hype for a position player for the Reds. Bruce was ranked No. 1 overall during his career as De La Cruz at 21. In his first seven major league games, he hit .577 with three homers.

Now De La Cruz will test his skills at baseball’s highest level, and games are expected to be scheduled in Cincinnati and beyond.
