MLB Rumors: Yankees may target trade for Royals C Salvador Perez to replace Trevino

In another setback for the New York Yankees, with reliever Jose Trevino ruled out for the season this past week, the club, tied for last place in the AL East with the rival Red Sox, needs to make a trade deadline move to replace their backstop.

There are obviously options out there for the Yankees that won’t break the bank. Someone like Yan Gomes of the Chicago Cubs comes to mind, a proven veteran at the point guard position who could be brought to New York on the trade market for a relatively modest price.

But the Yankees could take a big swing at the trade deadline, at least in theory, if they want to go after a guy they’ll see firsthand this weekend.

Reports in early July indicated that Perez, a longtime Royal and position stalwart with a no-trade clause in his contract, could be offered a chance to chase another World Series ring with a contender.

To be sure, given the current state of affairs, the Yankees may not qualify for that. But once Aaron Judge returns and, at least hopefully, looks like some offense for the Pinstripes, they can start climbing back into the stands.

The most important question for Brian Cashman to answer for the Yankees, though, is whether or not such a big move is worth it when they respond at the deadline if the club’s other interests buy in. Where things land on that aspect will determine whether or not Perez is a viable trade target for New York.
