The Italian manufacturer has joined other automakers in developing a concept car for the Gran Turismo franchise, which will be launched later this month.

The striking design includes a driver-opening hood that sits in the driver’s seat.

It uses in-game aerodynamics features seen elsewhere in the Ferrari line but turned to the extreme. The front features an S-channel, wheel arch air vents and a flat roof made of carbon fiber.

Steering is theoretically steer-by-wire, but, like the simulator, Ferrari uses haptic force feedback through the wheel. That makes it a video game car inspired by video game technology

Ferrari design director Flavio Manzoni also told Motorsport.com’s sister site Traxion.GG: “The Ferrari Vision Gran Turismo has a new character. [design] The language of the future years. You want to take care of him.

“[It was a] A very long design process that started with several 3D models. But in the end, we converge on a final solution that we believe best represents what we mean.

“The representation of the new design of the future is this poem of Ferrari.”

The rear end is derived from the recently introduced 499P, especially the wing and diffuser. Ferrari has developed the VGT with open wheel arches and a new patented aerodynamic technique with two side channels around the cockpit and side fenders to channel the front airflow.

Power is provided by the same twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine that powers the 296 GTB/GTS as well as the GT3 and 499P race cars. By not following any rules, the engineers were given complete freedom to take the 120-degree V6 to new heights.

It produces an impressive 1030 bhp at 9,000 rpm and 900 Newton meters (664 lb-ft) at 5,500 rpm.

Mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox borrowed from Formula 1, the ICE is powered by three electric motors, one mounted in the rear and the other two powering the front wheels.

The hybrid unit for the powertrain is for another 326 bhp (240 kW) in concept with 1,100 Nm (809 lb-ft) of rear-only combined torque.

Despite its complex powertrain, the Ferrari VGT is slightly heavier than the Mazda MX-5, with a dry weight of just 1,250 kg (2,756 lb) at 43.5 percent front / 56.5 percent rear.

The Ferrari Vision Gran Turismo accelerates from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in under two seconds and from 0 to 124 mph (200 km/h) in under five seconds. Flat out, the race car created especially for the GT7 can reach over 217 mph (350 km/h). The Italian brand posted a hypothetical lap time around the Fiorano track of just under 1 minute and 10 seconds.

A complete model of the car will be housed in the Ferrari Museum in Maranello.

“It’s been many years since I went to Maranello to talk about this project,” said Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi. It’s a dream come true,” he said.
