MLB Picks: Monday, July 3 Best MLB Bets and Player Tips

St. Louis Cardinals Miami Marlins

Miami Marlins -120 (Fanduel)

The Marlins are a good home team going 25-16 this season and I like this Braxton Garrett matchup. Without looking at the paper, I’d guess with Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado, the Cardinals have destroyed left-handed pitchers this season, but that hasn’t been the case. The Cardinals have the 5th-worst wOBA (.290) on the slate, and a 24.5 percent strikeout rate is the 10th-worst. Meanwhile, the Marlins face Myles Mikolas (4.44 ERA), who has had good success with southpaws this season. Miami has the fourth-best wOBA (.343) against left-handed pitchers this season, and their 20.3 percent strikeout rate is fifth in baseball. Garrett Cooper’s 4-for-9 home run against Mikolas in a small sample is worth noting.

Baltimore Orioles New York Yankees

Domingo German Under 5.5 Shots (-135 DraftKings)

If you agree with me on this proposition, I would sooner have it -152 on other sites. Germany is coming off a historic performance with a perfect game and has been very hit or miss the entire season. He had four or more earned runs in six of his 15 starts, and there were two other starts in which he allowed just one run in each of three innings. He’s thrown in strikeouts in seven of his nine starts and I think a lot of people will be on him overall tonight considering his latest outing.

Kansas City Royals by the Minnesota Twins

Joe Ryan Under 2.5 Runs Earned (-115 DraftKings)

I fully expected this line to be under 1.5 runs but around +150. Honestly, I’d rather have worse juice, but I’d rather have some other insurance coverage, so I like to win this one by 2.5 runs. Ryan has been lights out at home this season with a 2.70 ERA (0.79 WHIP) and a strikeout in every inning at home and on the road. He is coming off his worst season of the season (six earned runs in three innings) but I think we can give him a pass against the hottest team in baseball, the Braves. The Royals are a terrible hitting team this season and have a wOBA of .279 against right-handed pitching on the road with a strikeout rate of 27.2 percent, both of which are the second-worst marks in baseball.

Seattle Mariners The San Francisco Giants

Logan Webb Over 18.5 (+105)

This game has 7.5 overs and is a huge -145 favorite, suggesting a low-scoring career Webb is in good shape. He’s always been the better pitcher at home (2.31 ERA, 1.03 WHIP this season) and has been a hitter in five of his seven starts this season. Seattle is just 16-22 on the road this season and their team wOBA (.304) and strikeout rate (26.3 percent) are both in the bottom-10 in baseball. Two-thirds of the Mariners’ expected lineup has never faced Webb, and typically those situations involve the pitcher, not the batter.
