A Red Sox insider suggested before the trade deadline with the White Sox. But will either team actually participate in the deal?

Now that the MLB trade deadline has passed and the Boston Red Sox have closed the gap on the wild card spot, less than three weeks in and out of the Hola All-Star break, it looks like the club will have another buyer in the mix.

The question, of course, is how aggressive you intend to be.

That was the question The Athletic’s Chad Jennings (subscription required) tried to answer with insider Jim Bowden. Jennings offered several trades with Bowden of each review. But perhaps the wildest, the writer believes, was the blockbuster trade with the Chicago White Sox that sent Tim Anderson and Lucas Giolito to the Red Sox.

Get the Red Sox

SS Tim Anderson

SP Lucas Giolito

Get the White Sox

If Nick York

SP Wikelman Gonzalez

RP Ryan Fernandez

According to MLB Pipeline, York is the No. 3 prospect in the Red Sox system, while Gonzalez comes in at No. 11 and Fernandez is not ranked in the top 30. But is the White Sox enough to pull it off? Or are the Red Sox paying too much?

Let’s rate this business proposal in terms of legality and feasibility.

MLB Rumors: Rating Red Sox-White Sox trade for Tim Anderson, Lucas Giolito

It looks like it’s going to take more than a pair of top 11 prospects and throwing on top of it for the White Sox to get out of Tim Anderson. Yes, Anderson probably needs a makeover badly in the midst of a terrible season of his career, but Chicago isn’t going to let him just walk for a package like this, much less send Giolito.

Now the Red Sox can sweeten the pot by throwing in a more high-profile pitching prospect than Fernandez, who Bowden brought up in his evaluation of the proposed trade from Jennings. That could seal the deal – or at least it would be in a vacuum.

Another big issue with this business is the Giolito market. Although he is only a rental for the remainder of the 2023 MLB season, the fact of the matter is that he will be one of the most coveted tools on the market at deadline with teams like the Dodgers, Reds, and Astros, among others. With all the promise they can offer, that probably means this Red Sox package, even with York in the title, won’t be enough to get this trade through.

Does this mean the Red Sox and White Sox won’t trade? is not. There are other deals to be made, one of which is a possible reunion with Joe Kelly. But in light of this Andersen-Giolito blockbuster, that idea isn’t very realistic and even if Boston does improve the competition, that might not be worth it for a rebuilding project and a rental starter.

Business Rating: 1.5/10
