The Kansas City Royals will look to ride their surging offense in order to tie the series at 2-2 with the Seattle Mariners this afternoon. The visitors are rolling with rising Cy Young candidate George Kirby, who ranks 1st in WHIP (1.00) among AL pitchers. His 3.11 ERA and 3.65 xERA are solid as well, and overall he has proven to be a reliable starter in the majors. But…Kirby is human and has shown he’s capable of being cracked. In 2 of his last 6 starts he has surrendered 5+ runs in as many innings to subpar offenses.
As wild as it might seem, the Kansas City Royals do not have a subpar offense as of late. Since July 28 they rank 2nd in wRC+ (129), 2nd in BA (.305) and 2nd in slugging (.501) behind only the World Series favorite Atlanta Braves. The Royals have won 8 of their last 11 home games and average 6.9 runs per game during this stretch. While the bats have been on fire, the pitching has kept opponents in games. Angel Zerpa makes his first start of the season today, looking to improve upon his 7.71 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. Granted he has only pitched a total of 9.1 innings this year and those numbers are likely to come down as his 4.69 xERA and 4.85 xFIP suggest. With all things considered, I’ll be backing one of the hottest hitting teams in baseball. I believe there is value on the Royals at +200 odds to get another win at home.
