The Red Sox are getting creative.

Boston has seen their pitching staff perform extremely well in recent weeks for a number of factors that affect the aforementioned creativity. Chris Sale returned to the injured list as former starters Nick Pivetta and Corey Kluber established themselves in bullpen roles, leaving the Red Sox without a starter for Thursday’s series finale against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Progressive Field.

That was until Wednesday night.

The Red Sox are reportedly looking to call up Matt Dermody from Triple-A Worcester to make a start with Cleveland. Ian Browne of MLB.comPeter Abraham of the Boston Globe confirmed an earlier report.

Dermody is a veteran of four Major League Baseball seasons with 30 relief appearances with the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs. The 32-year-old posted a 5.60 ERA in 27 1/3 innings in the majors, eventually signing a minor league contract with the Red Sox before the 2023 season.

Boston Dermody’s decision to start comes down to divorce. The veteran has never started a big league game, but will be added to the 40-man roster and designated for assignment without risk. He has a 4.50 ERA in eight starts for the WooSox this season, striking out 47 batters in 44 innings.

You can watch Dermody make his Red Sox debut on NESN, starting with the Rangers at 7:10 p.m. ET Thursday night following an hour of pregame coverage.
