The Dallas Mavericks are considering signing veteran guard Kemba Walker to address their need for another creator in Luka Doncic’s supporting cast, sources have confirmed to ESPN.

Dallas will release Facundo Campazo, whose contract is not guaranteed, to create an open roster spot for Walker, sources said.

Walker, 31, a four-time All-Star whose career has been marred by knee issues, is a free agent after being waived by the Detroit Pistons in mid-October. He averaged 11.6 points and 3.5 assists in 37 games for the New York Knicks last season. Brunson in free agency.

Dallas, which fell to 9-10 after Sunday’s loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on the road to 0-3, missed Brunson’s scoring and play in last season’s Western Conference finals.

Doncic is leading the NBA in scoring with 33.1 points per game, but opponents are increasingly trapping him and daring his teammates to double-team the ball out of his hands. The Mavs have struggled to score when Doncic is out, averaging just 104.0 points per 100 possessions when he comes off the floor. They are 0-6 without scoring 30 points, including a loss to the Houston Rockets when Doncic was sidelined due to a layoff.

The Mavs tried to sign Walker to a max contract in 2019 free agency, but he opted to accept a similar offer from the Boston Celtics. He averaged 22.8 points and 5.6 assists in two injury-plagued seasons for the Celtics, trading Walker and a first-round pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Al Horford. Walker received a buyout from the Thunder, which allowed him to sign a two-year contract with the Knicks.

Walker’s tenure with the Knicks ended unofficially when the team announced he would no longer play for them. He sat out the final two months of the season.

Walker has been training in Florida this offseason as he awaits the opportunity to sign with an NBA team.

“Making sure I’m right, making sure I’m ready, making sure I’m ready when somebody calls me,” Walker said during an appearance on “Woj Pod” earlier this month. “I know I have the ability to help someone, to help a team. I know I can still play basketball.”

The Mavs’ plans to sign Walker were first reported on Substack.
