As Super Bowl LVI quickly approaches, the playoffs continue to become more and more historic. Today on Instagram, the official NFL page announced that Autumn Lockwood will become the first black woman to coach in the Super Bowl.

Additionally, Nicole Lynn—the agent of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Harts—made history by becoming the first black woman to represent an NFL quarterback in the Super Bowl.

This news hits 35 years after the big announcement that Patrick Mahomes would be the first black quarterback to face off in the Super Bowl. The NFL has come under fire for its lack of diversity and its handling of racial discrimination after San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat during the national anthem in 2016. Soon, the league said they would make changes.
In the year In 2019, the NFL partnered with Roc Nation to develop their talent for the Super Bowl halftime show. In the year In 2020, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez headlined the halftime show. In 2021, it was The Weeknd and last year Mary J. Blige, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar were in the cast.
This year’s halftime headliner is Rihanna and frankly, we want to see more black people on and off the field.
