The Cincinnati Bengals will benefit from an emergency third-quarter active roster spot from an NFL rule change approved this week.

according to Ian Rapoport Per NFL Network, teams can now include a third quarterback on the game day roster and it won’t count against the 53-man limit.

However, that emergency third quarter returner must be on the active roster to be eligible for emergency activation on game day. And in the game itself, that third passer can only enter the field of play if the two balls on the deep chart are injured — no bench.

Having more insurance behind Joe Burroughs is a good advantage for the Bengals. And it could encourage both Trevor Siemian and Jake Browning to continue. They haven’t been shy about how much they like the latter as a developmental prospect, so this will push them to find a way to keep all three in the final 53.
