Head coach Kyle Shanahan wants to see the NFL respond by allowing teams to prepare for contingencies like the one they faced against the 49ers last Sunday, perhaps by allowing a third quarterback to wear on game day, but not count against the 46-man limit. .

“He definitely supports it,” Shanahan said Wednesday. “When that regulation ended, we were scared to death. Whatever that was, you forget about it because you don’t see anybody going through, but then you remember how quickly the football game ended. Once that happened. So I think that’s a very smart thing to do.”

In theory, a team still wears a starter and a backup. Leaving the third-stringer in street clothes, he’ll also be a good fit, but he’s unlikely to play unless both quarterbacks in front of him are unable to participate due to injuries. Such a rule could have helped the 49ers last weekend, and it’s far from the only instance in recent years where people have had trouble figuring out who the emergency returner is. The same can be said of killers, who would benefit from such a change in attitude.

On Sunday, that emergency returner was running back Christian McCaffrey, who attempted one pass in the final two quarters.

There’s also a developmental aspect to the potential change, as it would allow teams to carry an additional quarterback on the roster and/or practice squad. At least, that’s how 49ers general manager John Lynch sold it Wednesday.

“I think it’s going to be good for football,” Lynch said. “You’re always trying to develop these guys, but you always weigh that, to be able to carry the three and be able to handle a reasonably complete set of position players in different positions. You put it there, everybody’s forced to work, a lot of people improve in the camps, I think it’s good for football.”

Of course last weekend was good for football.
