Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams was suspended for the first six games of the season, not knowing he violated the NFL’s gambling policy.

“He hit me blue,” Williams told reporters Thursday. “And, he hit other players around the league and on my team blue.”

The league suspended former Lions players Quintez Cefus and C.J. Moore along with Washington’s Shaka Toney through the 2023 season in April last year for betting on NFL games.

Williams, the No. 12 overall pick in 2022, and teammate Stanley Berryhill are set to bet on six games at a league facility outside the NFL.

“I didn’t know about that situation,” Williams said, adding that he doesn’t remember what he bet or where he gambled.

The former Alabama star, who missed much of his rookie season with a knee injury, said he was told the day before the suspension was announced last month.

“I was sick,” he recalled. I was hurt.

The league’s gambling violations have been rare in recent years. Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley was suspended for gambling on NFL games through the 2022 season and was later reinstated. In the year In 2019, Arizona Cardinals cornerback Josh Shaw was suspended from an NFL game for gambling and has not played in the league since.

“It’s an emphasis on the league right now,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said. “It’s a big thing. Our players know it. We tried to hammer it home, for sure, after that point and we did a few more times and we’ll continue to do it.

Although Williams said he was unaware of the NFL’s rules on gambling, he accepted responsibility for his costly actions.

He said he violated the policy. “I looked hard at these things.”

Notes: The Lions created a kicker competition by acquiring Riley Patterson from Jacksonville with a conditional seventh-round pick in 2026 to push for or possibly replace Michael Bagley. … RB David Montgomery and LB Malcolm Rodriguez left Thursday’s practice with injuries. Montgomery, who signed a three-year, $18 million contract during the offseason, appeared to injure his lower left leg during a non-contact practice.
