The major waves of NFL free agency have hit, but there are still several players who can contribute to winning NFL teams. Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire sifts through the free agent pool to pick the rest.

We took that list and went through it from the 49th point of view. They seem to have a 90-man roster they’re happy with, but teams are always looking to improve. This is where many of the best free agents come from. One of the few players on Farrar’s roster could help the 49ers improve their depth heading into training camp.

Here are each of the top remaining free agents with quick thoughts on whether the 49ers should sign them:

Geoff Burke-USA Today Sports

No. Hard pass.

David Butler II – USA Today Sports

Bridgewater would be a better option than Brandon Allen, but the 49ers aren’t cutting Allen to sign Bridgewater. It is not.

Kyle Terada-America Today Sports

It’s a little weird that Elliott is still around. Regardless, it doesn’t matter to San Francisco because Elliott may not be better than Jordan Mason at this point.

Ken Blaise-America Today Sports

Hunt’s productivity has declined over the past three years in Cleveland and the 49ers don’t need another running back. It is not.

Matt Marton-USA Today Sports

A few years ago this passivity might have been fun. Now it’s a pass (pun intended!).

Nathan Ray Sebeck-USA Today Sports

Fournette is another player who was more interesting a few years ago, or if the 49ers were looking for a player better suited to short-yardage backs. No.

Michael Chow-Arizona Rep

The 49ers should definitely at least give Hopkins a call. Chances of landing him are very slim but he is a good player who needs a lot of hard work. Yes they should try, but no he is unlikely to sign.

Kim Clement-America Today Sports

This time, Hilton will soon be dating Ray-Ray McCloud. His best years are behind him and he turns 34 in November. However, Hilton probably has a better chance to make an impact than Chris Conley or Willie Snead IV. Call this a yes.

Robert Deutsch-USA Today Sports

why not!? Gollade is coming off three terrific seasons in which he posted 63 catches for 940 yards and just three touchdowns in 31 games. He turns 30 in November, but in 2019 he was the Pro Bowler who led the NFL in touchdown catches. If Hilton is a yes, Golladay might be a yes.

Katie Stratman-America Today Sports

Of course, throw Watkins into the mix too!

Douglas DeFelice – USA Today Sports

Kyle Shanahan probably liked Jarvis Landry better than any other receiver on this list. He’s not a deep threat and isn’t particularly good after the catch. We say no.

Ken Blaise-America Today Sports

If the 49ers are to add a TE, he will be able to impact games as a receiver. Bratte had a great nine-year career, but his only years as a true receiving threat were in 2016 and 2017. It was downhill from there. It is not.

Dale Zanin-America Today Sports

Nah. Rudolph is in the same boat as Bratte. Maybe six or seven years ago when he was a touchdown machine for the Vikings. He’s not worth much to a team like San Francisco right now.

Kyle Terada-America Today Sports

Shaheen had 14 touchdowns between the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Recent injury history, however, makes it a no-no. He missed all of last season with a knee injury that the Dolphins were going to send him to the Texans in a trade.

Joe Camporeale-America Today Sports

Any offensive depth will help the 49ers. A cheap flier on Fisher, who didn’t play at all last season, wouldn’t be a bad idea. Yes.

Fant was an unmitigated threat in eight games for the Jets last year. But before that he was not terrible. It’s worth a look.

Geoff Burke-USA Today Sports

It wasn’t bad for Dallas last year when Peters played both spots on the left side. He would have good veteran depth if he wasn’t 41 years old. He is a legend who will one day go to the hall of fame. May he rest.

Jerome Myron-America Today Sports

Nsekh has done well since joining the league as an undrafted free agent. He is 37, but if he doesn’t win the first RT job, he offers some good tackling depth. Yes.

Pugh is a pretty average defender during his career. The 49ers have some young players who should get reps there with two veterans already in the mix. He is a no.

Kyle Terada-America Today Sports

Jackson was the best player for the Raiders in the middle class of 2010. He’s struggled to find his footing since 2019, including two years with the Seahawks in 2021 and 2022. Internal Affairs probably already took him out. He is a no.

Tim Fuller-America Today Sports

Two years ago, Saffold would have been an interesting option. He had a tough 2022 bill, though, and with 13 years in the NFL under his belt, it’s hard to imagine him making a dramatic turnaround in 2023. It takes a lot for an inside linebacker to guess yes. And not Saffold.

Geoff Burke-USA Today Sports

Turner has been with four teams over the past four seasons, and none of them have had much success. No.

Mark J. Rebilas-USA Today Sports

Risner’s draft as the Broncos’ second-round pick in 2019 got him attention, but he wasn’t particularly great for Denver and was graded as a run blocker in all four seasons, according to Pro Football Focus. That leaves him for the 49ers.

Robert Hanashiro-America Today Sports

Abushi is a journeyman with nine NFL seasons under his belt with the Jets, Texans, Seahawks, Cardinals, Lions, Chargers and Rams. His experience could help the team, but the 49ers already have a number of former interior options on board. It’s impossible to give time with every NFC West team.

Eric Hartline-America Today Sports

If the 49ers hadn’t committed Jake Brendel to a four-year contract, Jones would have made a good impression. They won’t be adding an 11-year veteran center this time around, though some of the team could be there. He’s not a bad player.

Bob Donnan-America Today Sports

This no. Elflin was not a great player in his six seasons.

The 49ers certainly need some edge help, but Floyd is better served as a 4-3 defensive end than a 3-4 outside linebacker. His final three years were very productive, with 29.0 sacks in 50 games. No, but only because of positioning factors.

The 49ers made several runs with Clark during his time with Seattle and Kansas City. He has 15.5 sacks over the past three years and brings the inside-outside versatility San Francisco lost when Charles Omenihu signed with the Chiefs. This is a yes.

Mark Lebryk-America Today Sports

Ngakou has never been a star run defender, but playing him as a pass rush specialist would help any team. The 49ers absolutely have to make a play here for a player who has 19.5 sacks over the last two seasons.

Tommy Gilligan-USA Today Sports

Somehow, Houston continues to slip through the cracks in free agency. In the year Yes.

Smoot is another player who hasn’t had the easiest time defending the run in the NFL. But he’s been pretty good when it comes to the quarterback. A flyer on the 28-year-old, who has 22.5 sacks over the past four seasons, makes sense. Yes it is.

Maria Lysaker-America Today Sports

Quinn is an amazing free agent. He had just 1.0 sacks in 13 games last year. In the year In 2021, though, he had 18.5 sacks and earned a second-team All-Pro nod. He had 2.0 sacks in 15 games in 2020. He had 11.5 in 14 games in 2019. For a team in need of edge help, kicking the tires on Quinn wouldn’t be a terrible idea. We say yes.

Sergio Estrada-USA Today Sports

Ingram’s best years are probably behind him at this point, and his injury history is a concern as he approaches his mid-30s. However, he had 35 pressures and 6.0 sacks in 17 games with the Dolphins last year. Casting him in the role of Dee Ford might work. We call it yes.

Jerome Myron-America Today Sports

Joseph was a really good player for a long time. In the year He’s not that player, as evidenced by his brief stint with the Eagles in 2021 following a rough final year with the Chargers.

Armond Feffer-USA Today Sports

Suh was about to join the 49ers last year, but he pushed them to join the Eagles. He’s been impressive for most of the last three years and it’s not worth bringing him in this time. It is not.

Michael Chow-Arizona Rep

Harris didn’t have a bad year with Seattle last year. He also provided an upgrade on the interior where quality depth would be beneficial for the 49ers. Yes.

Sam Green / The Inquirer / USA TODAY Network

This is an intriguing Sam LB option, but the 49ers already have a few players on the roster competing for that spot. Jack isn’t a good enough player to warrant dropping him in a crowded LB battle. no way.

Robert Hanashiro-America Today Sports

Van Noy’s position with San Francisco isn’t great. It is not.

Jeffrey Baker-America Today Sports

We were on board with this before the 49ers drafted a pair of LBs. Not to mention Alexander’s value cannot be maximized in the Sam LB role. It’s with a heavy heart, no.

Brad Penner-America Today Sports

Peters had a great career in part because of his willingness to gamble in coverage. That’s not necessarily what the 49ers need in the secondary, not to mention Peters doesn’t play special teams — a crucial piece of the puzzle for backup CBs. A training camp flyer might be useful to see if he is some improvement over Deommodore Lenoir. We say yes, but without much conviction.

Gregory Fisher-America Today Sports

No thank you please.

Jane Kamin-Oncia-America Today Sports

In the year 2021 was a comeback year for Hayward with the Raiders, but that was followed by a disastrous campaign in 2022. Peters has run into a similar issue with special teams play this career. He is also coming off a shoulder injury that cost him the final 11 games of the 2022 season. We say yes on Hayward for the same reason Peters got one.

Jerome Myron-America Today Sports

Brown v. He has only played 38 special teams snaps since 2019 and may not be an upgrade over the 49ers’ already existing CB depth.

Amos is a versatile player who could have had a role had the 49ers not invested in Jayer Brown in the draft. His struggles against Green Bay last year are also a bit of a red flag. The 49ers have a crowded safety department and if Amos doesn’t re-sign Tashaun Gipson to a one-year deal. It is not.

Joyner’s best years are behind him. This will be no.

Robert Hanashiro-America Today Sports

Adreley was a second-round pick of the Chargers in 2019, but he didn’t put it all together in one season. He is no different in security.

David Reginek-USA Today Sports

Houston-Carson has a proven special teams box with seven years of special teams contributions for the Bears. The 49ers don’t need another special teamer in their safety department. He is a no.
