In the year He was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 2017, and started his foundation a year later. This weekend is the foundation’s fifth annual wide receiver and defensive back camp.
“I wanted to encourage the younger kids,” Lewis said. “I was just like them when I was a kid. I wanted someone to come out here and show me the ropes and show me that they care about me and care about their community. I just wanted to inspire them.”
He doesn’t do it alone; It takes a village.
“I appreciate my coaching staff, the Cass Tech coaching staff, the Westside Cubs; everyone who had a hand in my success came back here and helped me,” Lewis said.
Then there is his mother, Linda Cornelius-Lewis, who helps run the foundation.
Cornelius-Lewis said, “The world is so mean now, you have to have someone with a heart.”
They also do an annual turkey giveaway and Thanksgiving dinner in Dallas.
“He would feed them there and then Jordan would talk to them and then go and play games with them,” Cornelius-Lewis said.
Detroit is the only city to offer this free soccer camp.
Not only will the young athletes leave exhausted and inspired, but they will also leave with official t-shirts and gloves.
“We know a lot of these kids come into the season and a lot of them don’t have gloves or don’t have gloves so we’re going to try to get them some equipment so they can go out there and have fun,” Lewis said.
The Jordan Lewis Foundation is creating a scholarship and hopes to have college football coaches join the camp next year. To help their efforts, visit their GoFundMe here.
