Entering his 10th season in the NFL after recording three 10+ sack seasons and playing in 111 career games, linebacker Marcus Golden had to wait a little longer than expected on the free agent market.

But good things come to those who wait, and Golden waited for the right time to finally sign a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, the most important veteran OLB3 behind TJ Watt and Alex Highsmith.

In the process of settling in well on defense, Golden is also dealing with some familiar faces, none more so than outside linebackers coach Denzel Martin.

Martin and Golden were roommates and teammates at the University of Missouri. For Golden, he’s excited to be reunited with the man he grew up with in Martin, he told reporters Tuesday from the locker room at UPMC’s Rooney Sports Complex and is excited to move forward with him.

“I know a couple guys on the team and … Denzel Martin is the outside linebackers coach. We grew up together.” According to the video, Golden told reporters Tribune-ReviewChris Adamski on Twitter. “He and I were college roommates, so it felt good to be able to reconnect with him.

Golden, who played at Missouri from 2012-2014, was teammates with Martin, who became the Steelers’ outside linebackers coach following a promotion in March. While Golden was a star at Mizzou and later a second-round draft pick by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2014 NFL Draft, Martin was a walk-on at Missouri with the opportunity to learn under the Tigers’ coaching staff with hopes of eventually becoming a coach.

At Missouri, Golden and Martin grew close, living together in an off-campus apartment. Golden Martin He said he helped sack Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel in an SEC game in early 2010. Columbia TribuneDavid Morrison knew in 2014 that Martin would one day become a coach because of his vision for the game.

“I was able to fire Johnny Manziel because of him. ‘Hey MG, look at his leg. If his foot is too far, he’s going back,’ ” Golden said in Morrison’s story. “He will be a good coach one day. I hope that he will end up as a head coach during the coaching period [Gary] Pinkel takes place here years later.

Now, nearly a decade later, Martin is that coach and oversees Golden’s transition to Pittsburgh as the third outside linebacker in a three-headed monster with Watt and Highsmith, not to mention rookie fourth-round draft pick Nick Herbig from Wisconsin, where, like Golden, he has short arms and He had size concerns coming out of college.

The Steelers are hoping Golden will have a breakout season like he did two years ago by reconnecting with a former college teammate and friend from their college days that Golden clearly holds in high regard. 11 sacks for the Arizona Cardinals. The blonde looked very happy to be reunited.
