Contestants prepare for Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Joey Chestnut In the 16th annual Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest on Tuesday, the men’s competition won 62 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. The champion eater, nicknamed “Jaws,” fell short of the 76 hot dogs and buns he served at the 2021 Independence Day event.

The men’s race was delayed for two hours Tuesday afternoon after a thunderstorm hit New York’s Coney Island. The New York Fire Department told CBS when asked about the lightning strike at Coney Island that one person was taken to the hospital after being electrocuted.

When asked about the weather delay after the win, Chestnut said “everybody’s screwed” with “emotion” and anticipation.

Sudo, 37, faced stiff competition from 27-year-old Mayo Ibihara, who finished second after eating 33.5 hot dogs and buns. Michelle Lesko, 39, finished third with 24.25 servings of hot dogs and buns.

Sudo and Ebihara seem to have finished very close at the end of the live competition. While the judges were guessing the official results, they chatted, shook hands and hugged each other before Sudo was declared the winner.

Fifteen women tried to pull down as many hot dogs and buns as they could on an outdoor stage set up near a local amusement park and boardwalk on New York’s Coney Island Tuesday morning.

Sudo last year Polished 40 hot dogs and buns to win the race.
