Thousands of immigrants who recently crossed the US southern border illegally and sought asylum are receiving many free benefits in New York City.
Mayor Eric Adams has pleaded with the White House to help Big Apple shoulder the burden, warning that the Biden administration’s border policies could cost the city more than $1 billion.
Here are some of the perks that come with being an intern in the Big Apple.

- Accommodation, for $300 a night, at the three-star Watson Hotel in the heart of Manhattan, with private bathroom and shower, or a single-men’s dormitory at the newly opened Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook.
- Three hot meals a day, rice, meat and beans, and “snacks in between meals like cookies,” one migrant at the terminal told The Post on Tuesday.
- Transportation including daily free metro cards for two rides from stations like Watsons. At the more isolated Brooklyn terminal, there is a free shuttle bus to Barclays Center downtown, and everyone receives a daily round trip ferry ticket.
- Amenities at the terminal include ping pong tables, five large screen TVs and a treadmill, as well as free international calls and WiFi. At Randall’s Island, a former city facility, there were city-provided Xboxes.
- The city’s health services include “urgent care services and enrollment in health coverage.” City officials declined to comment.
- Education for immigrant children in public city schools.
