Apple Watch Series 9 vs. It’s that time of year when we start wondering what the differences between the Apple Watch Series 8 will be. With Apple’s next-generation smartwatch expected to arrive in September, we’re excited to hear about the improvements the company has in store.
The Apple Watch Series 8 is the best smartwatch right now, but based on the Apple Watch Series 9’s improvements, it could become our top pick. The next Apple Watch could include new features for connectivity, mobility, security and more.
Based on the limited rumors we’ve heard so far, the Apple Watch Series 9 might just be an incremental upgrade over the Series 8. But Apple should have at least a few hardware updates in store. Apple Watch 9 vs. Here’s how the Apple Watch 8 might compare to the launch of the next-generation model, based on rumors and news.
Apple Watch Series 9 vs. Apple Watch Series 8: Price
Apple has been fixed on Apple Watch prices for several years, the starting price of the Apple Watch Series 8 corresponds to the Apple Watch Series 7 and most previous generations. The Apple Watch 8 currently starts at $399 for the 41mm model, with a premium for the larger 45mm model and cellular connectivity. You can check out the best Apple Watch deals for discounts though.
We haven’t heard any rumors of a price change this year, so we’re guessing the Apple Watch Series 9 will start at $399.
Apple Watch Series 9 vs. Apple Watch Series 8: Design
We’re not sure if the design of the Apple Watch Series 9 will change in any major way based on current rumors (or lack thereof). The Apple Watch Series 7 and Apple Watch Series 8 have the same design, so until we hear otherwise, we expect the Apple Watch Series 9 to resemble the previous two Apple Watch models.
Aside from the color options, there’s no visible design-wise that differentiates the Apple Watch Series 8 from the Apple Watch Series 7. So, the Apple Watch Series 9 might come in a special color, possibly matching the iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro.
Otherwise, customizing the look of the Apple Watch Series 9 comes down to swapping between the best Apple Watch bands.
Apple Watch Series 9 vs. Apple Watch Series 8: Features
Apple usually launches a few unique features with each new version of its smartwatch. The Apple Watch 8 gets a skin temperature sensor for cycle tracking and crash detection, while the Apple Watch 7 gets a QWERTY keyboard.
Apple Watch 8 new features are difficult to predict. Previous reports have indicated that the next Apple Watch will get a built-in blood glucose reader as well as a blood pressure measurement system, but we’ve heard that these features won’t be available for a few years.
Instead, Apple Watch Series 9 features could roll out on watchOS 10. From what we know about the watchOS 10 public beta, the software’s redesigned home screen experience offers a major overhaul driven by widgets and Smart Stacks. New watch faces, added training types, revamped apps, and other improvements make watchOS 10 the most significant software update we’ve seen for the Apple Watch in years.
Apple Watch Series 9 vs. Apple Watch Series 8: Battery Life
The Apple Watch Series 8 is rated for 18 hours of battery life with regular fitness tracking, sleep tracking, and always-on display. But the Apple Watch’s low power mode disables some power-draining features while the device is still mostly in use. Apple Watch can last up to 36 hours with low power mode on.
We know better than to expect an Apple Watch to last like a Fitbit or Garmin watch. While it’s true that the Apple Watch Ultra lasts up to 60 hours in low-power mode, we’re not hopeful that the next flagship Apple Watch will improve battery life. Apple may prove us wrong, though.
Apple Watch Series 9 vs. Apple Watch Series 8: Outlook
Apple set the smartwatch bar high for itself several years ago, which is why further improvements continue to pay off. But competing smartwatches are getting better. Big Apple Watch Series 9 improvements can establish the flagship as a leader in wearable devices, so we look forward to seeing it at Apple’s September event.
