Chelsea Handler hasn’t spoken to her ex Joe Coy “for a while” since they split earlier this year.
The comedian said the couple – who were longtime friends before they started dating in 2021 – couldn’t mend their friendship until Coy took “responsibility” in their split.
“I mean, there’s got to be some accountability, you know what I mean? As for what happened to him, because it was funny, Handler, 47, asked Brooke Shields, “Now what?” said the podcast on Tuesday.
“I don’t think we can have friendship until there is accountability and some responsibility.”
While Coy, 51, didn’t reveal exactly what she didn’t take responsibility for, the stand-up comedian explained that their relationship was “torn apart” during their 11 months together.
“There were just some features we couldn’t agree on,” Handler explained. “And I felt like I had to give up; Which maybe if I was 20 or 25 I would have been fine. But I was not willing to do it.”
The former “Chelsea’s Lately” host continued, saying that even though she was “very much in love,” she “wouldn’t give up” on herself.
“I thought I wouldn’t change my behavior to make you feel more comfortable. I’m not doing that,’ she shared.
“I really had to walk away from what I thought would be a forever relationship.”
Hanler added that the couple couldn’t agree on “a lot of things” and that while she thought therapy might help, “it didn’t.”
Eventually, she says, it becomes clear at the end that Coy is not “human.”
“Walking away from him was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do,” she said.
Coy and Handler called it quits in July 2022, with the “Life Will Be the Death of Me” author announcing the pair were “taking a break.”
That same month, Handler revealed on another podcast that the couple broke up because “you can’t change a person from the inside.”
