LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) – Damaged fiber cables are causing AT&T outages in Southwest Louisiana.
Many AT&T customers are reporting cellular or internet issues today. AT&T mobile users see an SOS symbol where the 5G symbol would normally be.
AT&T says two fiber optic cables were damaged during the recent severe weather that crossed Lake Charles Wednesday morning, but technicians are working to fix the problem.
KPLC is without internet in downtown Lake Charles.
AT&T parking lot on W. Prien Lake Rd. has been temporarily blocked by the authorities and customers are no longer allowed to enter. The store manager says too many people have been coming in to complain about a service failure that store staff can’t do anything about. Casinos and banks are also affected by the outage, according to the manager, and it’s not just a matter of mobile phone service.
KPLC reached out to local hospitals to find out if they are affected by the outage.
Lake Charles Memorial Health System officials say their internet and phone lines are still working. If a patient has trouble reaching them by phone and has Internet service, they can still contact the hospital at LCMH.com/contactus.
We have not yet received word from Christus Health on whether they are affected.
