You’ll either love it… or you’ll really love it. That seems to be the consensus to HotCars’ and digital artist Timothy Adry Emmanuel’s renders of what a modern two-door Acura Integra Type R should’ve looked like. The original coupe is an absolute JDM legend, largely thanks to its screaming 8,000rpm+ redline B18C naturally-aspirated motor and factory-installed limited-slip differential.

But evidently, that’s not all that made the original DC2 Type R so coveted, with prices on this 20+ year-old car ranging from $21,000 to near-six figure sums, according to Bring A Trailer. While early Integra Type R’s had typically 90s car styling with slim rectangular headlights, it’s the later years with its four circular headlights, or the spider eyes version that seemed to hit the hardest.

Our render captures the essence of the DC2 Integra Type R that people loved. At least we think it did, going by the general reactions to it on our social media channels. The Integra Type R Render Is Exactly What People Imagine

It looks like Timothy Adry Emmanuel got it right with this render’s overall proportions and specific styling details that hark back to the original DC2 Type R. The greatest thing about having an enthusiast design a car is that they know exactly what fellow like-minded enthusiasts expect.

User avatorojar echoes the sentiment, “It’s a shame how enthusiasts are ALWAYS better concept designers than the actual concept designers”. User aer.autodesign chimes in, “… I too have noticed that fan made renders are almost always more appealing than what the manufacturers come up with. It probably all comes down to budget. Which makes sense but sucks that cars flop.” “NOW THAT’S AN INTEGRA… they need people who can really design cause the production model Integra is trash!!!”, chimes in user beaudprnt. Harsh, but hey, the fans have spoken.

User Cornelius.stone.9 says, “I’d get one, I’m not even into imports”, which is high praise for someone who’s not into Japanese cars. a_1banks likes the finer details, “Love the shaved door handles and all”, which give the render it’s ultra-clean look.

Some Think Our Integra Type R Render Has One Flaw

Of course, as with any concept or render based on subjective tastes of the individual, opinions differ in regard to one specific area of the Type R concept. And that’s its headlights.

singlecabdanny says, “Make realistic headlights and this would sell like crazy.” Shlow_k24z chips in, “Change the headlights and we have a winner boys! 🙌👏”. There’s definitely a trend here, rileycbridge says, “ If the headlights were literally anything else I would’ve liked it.”

Honestly, it’s a chance our digital artist took with the headlights to throw back to the original, but with a thoroughly modern twist. With lighting technology in the form of LEDs, it would’ve almost been a mistake to not push it to the limit with the twin circular ring LED headlights on either side. Maybe a fix could be to use the signature circular light design cue as daytime running lights, with actual LED lights housed inside the ring instead. Who knows? The important thing to take home is that fans clearly want a sporty looking coupe that throws back to the original DC2 Integra Type R.

The 2023 Acura Integra We Got Isn’t What People Want

There’s enough research and market analysis to tell you that it’s harder to sell coupes now. The two-door formula just doesn’t seem to hold the same appeal that it used to. In the case of Honda, or Acura, the Integra nameplate was even dropped for nearly two decades. When it was brought back recently, it was only as a five-door. That’s because the Integra is essentially a Civic under the skin, and the Civic itself isn’t available as a two-door coupe any longer.

And while the 2023 Acura Integra is a mature, sophisticated take on the Honda Civic, it isn’t the Integra we all remember and love. It even has a great combination of a fun and responsive chassis and handling, with an able powertrain. But the design is possibly just too grown up for what fans of the original expect. Not to mention that neither Honda nor Acura have any plans of making an Integra Type R in the near future. Tony Sanchez says, “The days of two door hatchback performance Hondas or Acuras is a fantasy. Marketing has determined all consumers want and need a five door EV or 1.5 liter with a 10 speed CVT in an SUV.”

In the meantime, we can only hope that the positive reaction to our take on a modern Integra Type R gives Honda/Acura the assurance they need that if they make it, people will buy it!
