HOLLAND — Holland BPW has announced another milestone as they work to bring high-speed fiber broadband to every address in the city.
At Dutch BPW’s May 22 board meeting, the board voted to award EX2 Technology a design-build contract to build the city’s fiber optic network.
HBPW has been operating fiber optic networks in the Netherlands since the 1990s to offer better management of its water and electricity systems. In 2017, the service offered a shared gigabit internet fiber network to businesses and residents in parts of downtown Holland. Now it will spread across the city.
Back in August, voters approved a proposal authorizing HBPW to issue up to $30 million in bonds. Then in January, Dave Koster, general manager of the Dutch Public Works Board, explained that the vote would mean that “every address in the Netherlands will have access to high-speed, reliable broadband service on a community-owned network that is locally owned and operated. maintained.”

Moving forward, HBPW will rely on EX2’s expertise to compile the final design of the pass-through network while finding ways to maximize the best use of their existing resources.
Ultimately, HBPW hopes to have a grid design that will identify different zones to be built across the city. This will allow residents to sign up for early alerts to know when their local lane will be built.
Construction of the network begins this fall, and the first service hub will be operational by summer 2024. We hope that the entire network will be built in about two to three years.
