A new triple threat mobile app has made its debut in San Antonio. Too Good To Go allows users to save money, fill bellies and help eliminate food waste at area restaurants with a few easy clicks.
The Denmark-based business partners with restaurants to offer deals — some as low as $3.99 in San Antonio — on bags filled with food that restaurants would otherwise toss in the trash at the end of the day. Too Good To Go launched in Europe in 2015 and reached the US territory in 2020. This month, the brand expanded its footprint in Texas with a presence in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Too Good To Go has been operating in Austin since 2021 and currently works with more than 450 restaurants and other businesses across the state.
“We are excited to expand our app in Texas to partner with the dynamic food scene and culture,” Too Good To Go CEO Chris MacAulay said in a media release. “By partnering with incredible food businesses in Texas, we want to make reducing food waste accessible to everyone. Together, with the great restaurant community and residents in Texas, we know we will have an impact of immediately.”
The Too Good To Go mobile app is free to use. Most orders are around $5 per bag.
Very good to goUsers typically won’t know exactly what each order contains, as restaurant inventories can change at the end of each day. The app offers what are called “Surprise Bags” at a deep discount over the restaurant’s normal retail prices that can be picked up by customers.
COMPOST QUEENS: San Antonio’s Compost Queens takes food from landfills to replenish the soil
Currently, only a handful of San Antonio restaurants are participating in the program. Recent offerings include desserts from Baklovah Bakery & Sweets and Alebrije Bakery, snacks from Zaatar Lebanese Grill, A Way To The Heart and Pasha restaurants, and groceries from Indian Supermarket, among others. Prices range from $3.99 to $12.
According to Too Good To Go, about 133 billion pounds of food worth about $161 billion is wasted each year in the US. Since making its debut in this country, Too Good To Go says it has saved more than 5.5 million meals from landfills by working with more than 11,000 businesses here.
The Too Good To Go app is available on both iOS and Android platforms. More information and participant registration can be found at toogoodtogo.com.
