While we still have two more Tensor G2-based devices coming this month, it’s clear that Google’s upgrade to the Tensor G3 in the Pixel 8 series will bring some serious improvements to the chip’s specs.

According to the tipster Kamila Wojcichowska Through Android Authority.The Tensor G3 will be a major upgrade with modern cores, support for the latest storage tier, a new GPU, and more.

Starting with the cores, the Google Tensor G3 obviously changes the core layout again, this time with a 1+4+4 layout. This is a change from the Tensor and Tensor G2, both of which had 2+2+4 layouts.

The single largest core will be the Cortex-X3, clocked at 3.0GHz. Behind that is the ultra-modern Cortex-A715, with four of these mid-cores clocked at 2.45GHz. That’s a big step up from the Cortex-A78 on the Tensor G2. For the “smaller” cores there are four Cortex-A510 cores clocked at 2.15GHz, again more modern than the Cortex-A55 in both Tensor generations.

All this in the year It was announced in 2022, so technically the Tensor G3 is still a bit behind, but closer than ever.

These improvements alone should provide a strong boost to the CPU’s overall performance and efficiency. This brings support for ARMv9, which allows security improvements. The Pixel 8, according to Wojciechowska, uses this update to implement Memory Tag Extensions (MTE) from ARM to help prevent memory-based attacks. This also completely removes 32-bit support, which Google has already removed from the Pixel 7.

Another major point of improvement is with storage, with this new chip allowing the Pixel 8 to support the fast and efficient UFS 4.0 storage on devices like the Galaxy S23 Ultra and OnePlus 11.

The GPU is also getting a major upgrade, with the Tensor G3 reportedly opting for Arm’s new Immortality GPU, specifically the Mali-G715. That’s not the latest generation, but the 10-core GPU offers a big upgrade, including support for ray tracing.

Google Tensor Chip

Tensor G3 further improves video decoding/encoding with “BigWave” block. It retains the AV1 decoding from the Tensor G2, but increases AV1 encoding up to 4k30. The Pixel 8 chip supports up to 8k30 for encoding, but it’s unclear if Google will actually ship the feature. The TPU update is coming under the code name “Rio”, bringing a faster clock speed of 1.1GHz. No details, but it’s said to be a “considerable” upgrade. New digital signal processor “Callisto” brings a 4-core, 512 kB/core configuration at 1065 MHz, which is said to eliminate additional image processing.

As previously reported, the Pixel 8’s Tensor G3 chip also doesn’t bring any changes to the modem, which is probably not a big deal considering the major upgrade that came with the Exynos 5300 modem in the Tensor G2. In a previous test, we found the Pixel’s modem performance comparable to Qualcomm’s.

Google Tensor G3 is also expected to be a 4nm chip built on Samsung’s process. The Pixel 8 series is expected to arrive in October 2023.
