Kansas City, Missouri Officials announced the opening date for the new Kansas City International Airport terminal during a ceremony Monday afternoon. Airport officials and Mayor Quinton Lucas made the announcement at the new terminal at 4 p.m. “We are very pleased to announce that we have an airport terminal that will be operational on time,” Lucas said in Monday’s announcement. The new terminal Construction of the new airport terminal began in March 2019. The $1.5 billion terminal has 40 gates and can expand to 50 gates in the future. The new terminal will include a 6,200-space parking structure and an improved experience for travelers inside. KMBC got a chance to see inside the finished project. Vantage Airport Group, which was selected to handle airport concessions, said there will be 50 different restaurants. and shops in the new terminal. 80 percent of discount options will be from locally based companies. The airport itself is divided into two separate concourses with a large bridge connecting the two sides. Two different stages divide arrivals and departures. The new terminal will also have information desks, a rentable meeting room and a meditation room for the first time in an airport. In the terminal, passengers are checked through one of 16 security checkpoints. Airport officials said it would be faster than the current check-in process.
