A prequel to the kid-friendly horror-comedy franchise in this animation GremlinsRules for caring for mogwai are clearly laid out and quickly broken. After all, a Gremlins The project without all that horrible, unshakable destruction? Check what’s left. Secrets of Mogwai (The first two episodes of which are streaming on Switch Max) deliver on all fronts.

When we meet Gizmo, a mogwai community in 1920 China is freezing when a giant bird attacks the creature’s compound. Throwing stones at the attacker, he goes to the plate and tries to save the crowd. After bumping into some brush, Gizmo and the bird go into the river, but luckily for Mogwai, he drops a driftwood that keeps him dry, but shows his fear of water. (Phew!) When the passenger finally reaches the ground, he is met by a traveling circus that claims to be theirs.

In Shanghai, we met the Wing family, including 10-year-old Sam, his parents Fong and Hun, and the boy’s grandmother. Grandpa is a wisecracking character, and when he and Sam go out to buy supplies for their family’s potions practice, Mom promises to run home whenever Sam mentions anything related to adventure, magic, or knives. It doesn’t bother me in the least!

Grandpa takes the boy to the southern market, which is home to thieves and rapists. That’s where they run into the aforementioned circus that introduces Jizmo to the public as a new singing cat! Together they watch a group of shadow kids led by Elle commenting on how Gizmo wants their boss. Once Mogwai’s little dress hat falls off, Grandma’s internal organs react. If you leave the circus now, Shanghai will collapse! Okay, that sounds dramatic, Pops.

But Gramps explains: The Mogwai is a mysterious creature that no one has seen in ages. The last time someone was left in human care, cities burned, people died and China was almost destroyed! They have to take out the Mogwai who said it, but before they can get him angry, Elle offers Gizmo a large sum of money. Grandpa creates a huge distraction and Gizmo is on the run after biting the gang leader. After some romp animation, Sam and Grandpa convince Gizmo that they won’t hurt him and he agrees to go with them.

They entered the house and my grandmother immediately began to pack. Return the creature to its home in the Valley of Iad. And it can be a potentially deadly trip! Before they can discuss it further, Sam accidentally knocks a cup of water onto the little guy, and within seconds, four more strange-looking moguais sprout, leading us to our first instruction: never, ever wash them! (oops)

Secrets of the Gremlins Mogwai PremiereAt the end of the premiere, Riley Green had a wish that the gang boss Mogwai was gone, but was disturbed when he got hold of a flyer for his family’s drug practice.

In part 2, Grandpa makes some more rules: no bright light and he doesn’t feed them after midnight. Soon after, Elle and Green knocked on their door. Green guesses correctly that Grandpa was a treasure hunter back in the day and asks the old man to give him the creature. Grandpa uses a magic dram to take out the Green Friends. But Greene then picks up some pearl magic, which pulls him into a small place where he eats Grandpa’s soul.

Fong, Sam and all the Mogwai men escape, Hon stays behind and is captured. Soon after, Fong lures the bad guys out of the corridor and tells Sam that he must take Mogawai to the Jade Valley alone. But while Sam and Gizmo fall asleep, the four Mogwai clones begin to rule the neighborhood. They slash bike tires, terrorize the restaurant and steal all the trash cans. (yum!)

Sam and Gizmo find clusters of evil gremlins waiting to hatch (no doubt the result of a mogwai feeding after midnight), but Green soon catches up with them. Before Big Bad can do any damage, Elle knocks her out with a wok and tells them she’s coming with them. Green swears she didn’t know he was hurting Sam’s family. She promises to help him and will only take a smidgen of the Jade Valley’s treasure. Enough to help outgrow Greene for the rest of her life. They agree to work together and she says she can send a message to his parents in the magical prison. The first step in her plan: steal a pair of keys and jump on a passing train.

Green wakes up to be greeted by evil Gremlins hatched from their egg-shaped cocoons.
