Titanic director James Cameron has been speaking about the Ocean Gate sub disaster, which was confirmed to have suffered a “horrific explosion” as they raced to see the famous wreck.

Cameron is a veteran of deep sea diving, having visited the site of the Titanic many times and dived into the ocean and descended into the Mariana Trench.

Speaking to ABC News on Thursday, the Canadian director drew grim comparisons to the Ocean Gate disaster and the Titanic, adding that there was concern among the engineering community about the ship, which ultimately claimed five lives.

Cameron’s fascination with the ocean is well documented in his recent film Avatar: The Waterway It features several scenes filmed underwater.

One of his earlier films, the deep, In the year Produced in 1989, it features scenes filmed underwater and has since resurfaced on social media.

Actor Michael Biehn’s character, NAVY Lt. Hiram Coffey, faces an inevitable fate as his sub crashes over the edge of a cliff and quickly descends into the darkness below before the pressure overwhelms the ship.

On Thursday, US Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger said there did not appear to be any connection between the underwater noises found during the search and rescue mission and the wreckage on the sea floor.

“It was a heavy implosion of the ship that would have picked up the sonar buoys that would have generated a significant broadband sound down there,” he said.
