watchOS 10 introduces an improved navigation system. Here’s how to use your Apple Watch following this major OS update.

watchOS 10 replicates the navigation system on recent Apple Watches, including the Apple Watch Ultra. This means that the gestures and buttons you used on watchOS 9 may no longer work as expected, as the actions have been redesigned. Don’t worry though. We’re here to tell you exactly what each button and gesture does now.

Apple Watch physical buttons

Starting with the Apple Watch’s physical buttons:

  • Rotating the Digital Crown now brings up the new widgets and lets you scroll through them.
  • Clicking the Digital Crown once opens the app library.
  • Double-clicking the Digital Crown shows recently opened apps.
  • Clicking and holding the Digital Crown activates Siri.
  • Clicking the side button will open/close the control center.
  • Double-clicking the side button will show your Apple Wallet cards.
  • Clicking and holding the side button brings up the power menu.

Gestures on watchOS 10

To navigate to watchOS 10 gestures on the home screen:

  • Instead of opening the Control Center, swiping up from the bottom reveals the new widgets.
  • Swiping down from the top reveals the Notification Center, just like on watchOS 9.
  • Swiping left and right no longer switches between the different watch faces you’ve added.
  • Tapping and holding the center of the watch face allows you to edit an existing watch face, add a new one, or delete them – as seen in watchOS 9.

no more! That’s all you need to know about the new gesture and navigation system in watchOS 10. While you may feel confused when you first update your Apple, your muscle memory will eventually catch up and you’ll adapt to the new system. Ultimately, Apple won’t make significant changes to the device’s main controls. So rest assured that such big changes won’t happen again in the watchOS department anytime soon.

Personally, I don’t like that swiping up now shows widgets instead of the control center. This is because I use the latter more than the former and swiping is easier and faster than clicking the side button. However, people will agree, and we will all be better off with this reform.
