New 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models may finally be available following rumors that Apple has a product announcement tomorrow and the discovery of an unreleased MacBook Pro in a Canadian regulatory database.

Ahead of the potential launch, we’ve recapped everything we’ve heard so far about the next-generation 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.

M2 Pro and M2 Max chips

M2 Pro and high performance

A key new feature of the next MacBook Pro models is expected to be the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips for faster performance. BloombergMark Gurman says those chips offer only “marginal” performance improvements over the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips in current models, as benchmarks released last year suggested.

Wi-Fi 6E

The wireless frequency ranges listed in the Canadian regulatory filing indicate that the new MacBook Pro supports Wi-Fi 6E, which expands Wi-Fi to the 6GHz band for more bandwidth, faster speeds, and lower latency. The current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro standard supports Wi-Fi 6, which is limited to the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

Fast RAM

The new MacBook Pro models are rumored to be equipped with “very high-bandwidth, high-speed RAM,” but the details are unclear. On a speculative basis, the new models could be equipped with Samsung’s latest LPDDR5X RAM with up to 33% more memory bandwidth and 20% less power consumption.

There are no design changes

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Gurman pointed out that both the new MacBook Pro models have no external design changes and few major features.

This feature won’t be too surprising, given that Apple is releasing high-end MacBook Pros in October 2021 with additional ports like HDMI and MagSafe, an all-black keyboard area at the top of the display, and more. MacBooks go several generations between major hardware changes, so a particular bump in 2023 is a reasonable expectation.
