Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will bring a trick to the party this year: blazing data speeds through their new USB-C ports. But now we know not only how fast it will be thanks to a new leak, but that it will do something no one expected.
“The port on the Pro will be Thunderbolt 3. I know there’s a lot of speculation in our community, but it’s TB3,” the anonymous insider reveals. analyst941who revealed accurate data about Dynamic Island ahead of the iPhone 14 Pro launch last year.
Thunderbolt 3 operates at up to 40 gigabits per second (Gbps), which is equal to 5,000 megabytes per second (MBps). By comparison, the Lightning port on all current iPhones is limited to USB 2.0 speeds, which is 480 megabits per second, equivalent to 0.48 Gbps / 60 MBps. It’s a stratospheric improvement.
But the real surprise is that Analyst941 claims that the new port will also be coming to monitors up to 4K. Apparently there will be special “features” in iOS 17 to take advantage of this, although the example given is, in their words, “niche”:
For example, a new cinematic feature that will allow direct 4K Thunderbolt outputs to monitors during recording. Basically, you’ll have the phone with all the camera controls, connected to a monitor that displays the live 4K camera footage without any controls; in 16:9.
Whether the new features could include outputting a game or movie to a standard monitor or TV without Apple TV or AirPlay remains to be seen, but it does open the door to iPad Pro-like multi-screen support, which could connect to monitors to extend their function. work space.
Regardless, it’s really the raw speed benefits of Thunderbolt 3 that excite the most. iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max owners will potentially be able to back up and restore their phones in minutes, and enthusiasts will be able to quickly transfer giant files created from ProRAW photos and ProRES videos. It is a radical improvement in iPhone capabilities.
And that’s not the only change coming. Previously, leaks have revealed a more curved design, lightweight titanium chassis, periscopic zoom camera and possible price hike. But it’s the inclusion of USB-C that could ultimately have the biggest impact — even if Apple were forced to do so.
05/01 Update: Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has revealed more details of Apple’s iPhone and iPad plans via his Power over newsletter, and they focus on AI. According to Gurman, Apple is working on an AI-driven virtual trainer, codenamed Quartz, that will be built into the iPhone and Apple Watch and launch next year.
Gurman says that Quartz “will essentially be a trainer built into the iPhone and Apple Watch. It will use AI and data from your devices to build personalized wellness plans.”
This is an important game from Apple. The company has been criticized for the slow evolution of its AI assistant, Siri, which was launched in 2011. Moreover, the news comes just weeks after a exclusive report claimed that Apple’s AI ambitions have been severely hampered by caution and high-level turf wars.
Needless to say, an AI trainer in isolation won’t fix this, but at a time when AI-based chatbots, led by ChatGPT, are exploding in popularity, Apple needs to show it’s in the game. And, done well, that would be a step in the right direction.
