As far as I can tell, this is not the latest example of vigilantism. However, the Oscar Mayer Wainer Mobile, a giant Wainer on wheels, is getting a new name.

An eye-catching vehicle is now the Frankmobile. As you know, frankfurters.

Oskar Mayer, owned by condiment king Kraft Heinz, said the completely unnecessary change “gives credit to the brand’s 100% beef franks.”

“The Wienermobile has been a beloved American icon that has inspired smiles and passion for our famously sweet wiener purveyors for nearly 100 years,” Oscar Mayer brand manager Stephanie Vance said in a statement.

That may be true, but considering that Wiener Mobile has been on the road since 1936, changing the name at this point is either a corporate gimmick or a publicity stunt.

I’ll go with the latter – and admit that I’m offering free marketing that Oscar Mayer wants.

Along with renaming Wiener Wagen (I made that up; Oscar, if you will), the company is also renaming it “Frankfurters.” Very fast career title, all things considered.

“Oscar Mayer designed every detail of the Frankmobile to encourage people not to take things too seriously,” the company said.

So take the name change with a grain of salt (or 370 milligrams of sodium per Oscar Mayer beef frank).

After the current flow of free press, let Oscar Mayer see the light and announce that Frank Mobile is the Wiener Mobile again.

As it should be.
